Answer Engine Optimization

What is GEO and AEO? A Philippine Business Guide

Your next customer is asking an AI who to call. If the AI doesn't know you exist, that customer goes to someone else.

A property buyer in Cebu opens ChatGPT and types: “Best real estate broker in Cebu for condos.” The AI responds with 3 names and a short explanation for each. Your brokerage, which has been in Cebu for 12 years, isn't on the list.

That buyer never visited Google. Never saw your Facebook ads. They went straight to an AI, got their answer, and moved on. This is already happening across the Philippines, in real estate, legal services, accounting, SaaS, and dozens of other industries. Two terms describe the practice of making sure you show up in those AI-generated answers: Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO).

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your online presence so that AI systems include and cite your business when they generate answers. “Generative engine” refers to any AI tool that writes an original response rather than returning a list of links. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews all qualify.

GEO borrows some ideas from traditional SEO, like structured data and content quality, but applies them to a different problem. In SEO, you're trying to rank on a page of links. In GEO, you're trying to be named inside a generated paragraph. The AI has to trust your content enough to pull facts from it, attribute them to you, and present them as part of its answer.

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimization focuses on getting your content cited by any system that returns direct answers instead of links. The term is broader than GEO because it includes non-generative answer formats too: featured snippets, voice assistant responses, knowledge panels.

In practice, the work looks similar. You structure your content so machines can extract clean, attributable answers from it. You make sure your business name, location, and services are explicitly stated and consistent across every platform. You use schema markup so AI systems can identify what your page is about without guessing.

Why the Distinction Barely Matters for Most Philippine Businesses

GEO and AEO address the same underlying shift: buyers are getting answers from AI instead of clicking through search results. Whether you call it GEO or AEO, the work is the same. You need structured content, consistent entity information, and a clear signal that your business is the authoritative source for your topic in your market.

If someone tells you GEO is a completely separate discipline from AEO, they're selling you two services when you need one. For a Philippine business trying to show up in AI search results, the practical difference between these terms is close to zero.

Which AI Platforms Matter in the Philippines in 2026

AI search adoption in the Philippines is growing fast. Here are the platforms your customers are actually using.

ChatGPT has the largest user base among Filipino professionals and business owners. When someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation, it synthesizes answers from its training data and, with web browsing enabled, from live search results. If your business isn't well-represented in either source, you don't appear.

Google AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries that now appear above traditional search results on Google. For Philippine users searching in English, these appear on a growing percentage of queries. If Google's AI decides to summarize the answer instead of showing links, you need to be the source it pulls from.

Gemini is Google's standalone AI assistant and powers much of Google's AI search. It has deep integration with Google Search, YouTube, and Google Workspace, which gives it broad context on businesses with a Google presence.

Perplexity is an AI search engine that cites its sources directly. Every answer includes numbered references. It's gaining traction among researchers, journalists, and business professionals who want to verify where the answer came from.

The First 3 Things Any Philippine Business Can Do Today

GEO and AEO can feel abstract until you start. These 3 steps are concrete and free.

1

State who you are and what you do on every page

Write your business name, location, and primary service in a single sentence near the top of your homepage and every service page. "Reyes Accounting is a tax advisory firm in Makati serving SMEs and OFW investors." AI needs that explicit statement. If your homepage says "Welcome to our firm" with no specifics, you're invisible.

2

Add structured data markup to your website

Schema.org markup tells AI systems what your page is about in machine-readable format. At minimum, add Organization schema (name, address, services) and FAQ schema for any question-and-answer content. Most Philippine business websites have zero structured data. Adding it puts you ahead of 90% of your competitors.

3

Test your AI visibility right now

Open ChatGPT and Perplexity. Search for the exact query your customers would use, including your city. "Best [your service] in [your city]." Run it 5 times each. Count how many times your business appears. That's your baseline. If the answer is zero, you know where you stand.

These aren't theoretical. We built realestateseo.ph using these same principles. Within 81 days, it ranked above Google's own AI Overview for its target queries. Zero ad spend. The site earned its position through structured content, explicit entity declarations, and consistent schema markup.

The Philippine market has a structural advantage for GEO and AEO right now: thin competition. Most local businesses haven't started optimizing for AI search at all. The bar to become the default AI answer for your category in your city is lower here than in the US, UK, or Singapore. That window won't stay open.
